DESCRIPTION

A thermistor, whose resistance value varies according to the engine coolant temperature, is built into the engine coolant temperature sensor.

The structure of the sensor and connection to the ECM is the same as the intake air temperature sensor.

Condition (A):

When engine coolant temperature is less than 35°C (95°F) at engine start and the engine coolant temperature sensor shows a change of less than 1°C (1.8°F) in 60 seconds while the engine is at high load.

Condition (B):

When engine coolant temperature is higher than 98°C (208°F) at engine start and the engine coolant temperature sensor shows a change of less than 3°C (5.4°F) in 240 seconds while the engine load is equal to that when the engine is idling

Note:

When replacing the ECM, perform ECM Initialization and Registration.

Tip:
  • When the ECM must be replaced, before replacing the ECM, perform the "Learning Values Save" function using the GTS. Then after installing a new ECM, perform all of the initialization and registration procedures for the "Learning Values Write" function by following the instructions shown on the GTS display.

  • Read freeze frame data using the GTS. Freeze frame data records the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.

PROCEDURE

  1. CHECK ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P0116)

    1. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the GTS on.

    3. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes.

    4. Read the DTCs.

      Powertrain > Engine and ECT > Trouble Codes

      Tip:

      If any DTCs other than P0116 are output, troubleshoot those DTCs first.

  3. CONFIRM WHETHER MALFUNCTION HAS BEEN SUCCESSFULLY REPAIRED

    1. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the GTS on.

    3. Clear the DTCs.

      Powertrain > Engine and ECT > Clear DTCs
    4. Turn the ignition switch off.

    5. After starting the engine, drive the vehicle in 3rd gear at a vehicle speed of 60 km/h (37 mph) or more for more than 10 minutes.

      When performing the confirmation driving pattern, obey all speed limits and traffic laws.

    6. Allow the engine to idle for 5 minutes or more.

    7. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes / Pending.

    8. Confirm that the pending DTC is not output again.
